From Sousa to Fiesta! NWWS Music of the Americas

The Northwest Wind Symphony’s winter concert, “Music of the Americas,” takes place this Saturday, February 6, at Corbet Theatre. The concert begins at 7p.m. and features music of North and South America.

The program’s first half presents staples of American concert band music – “American Overture” by Joseph Wilcox Jenkins, and “Chorale and Alleluia” by Howard Hanson, as well as works by relative newcomers Anthony Plog and Kathryn Salfelder. The first half of the program concludes with a John Philip Sousa classic, “The Fairest of the Fair.” The second half of the program turns south to the joyous sounds of the fiesta! High-energy music by Marquez, Bautista, and Padilla will make it difficult for listeners to stay in their seats. The concert concludes appropriately with South American music by a North American composer, H. Owen Reed.

Featured guest artists include Jameson Bratcher on tuba, NWWS’s own Dane Hurd on trumpet, and John Welsh, guest conductor. Tickets are $12 general admission, available at the door or from Book ‘n’ Brush or Heymann Whinery. Students are free (15 and under must be accompanied by a paying adult).
